In this two-week introduction to ceramics, experiment with ancient hand building and firing techniques, as well as contemporary clays and glazes. Week one explores prehistoric pottery forms and designs, explains thebasic techniques of pinch and coil construction for pots, and produces musical shakers and embossed tiles. Week two investigates firing, glazing, and decoration methods to produce pendants, beads, and containers.

Terrific Textiles

Using fiber art, get creative with paint, dye, and wet wool. Make colorful and useful objects from fabrics and felt—a tote bag, a stuffed toy, a felt pouch, and a wall hanging decorated with block prints, natural dyes, and yarn.

Celebrate the diversity of Latino culture through singing songs, making folk art such as papel picado, dancing, and learning Spanish words.

Explore the long-ago world of dinosaurs by making plaster molds, sketching fossils, hearing surprising tales collected by famous paleo experts, and building a papier-mâché model of favorite dinos. Field trip to real dino tracks on Tuesday.

Detecting Wildlife

Increase your awareness and understanding of wildlife by reading the landscape and honing your skills of observation. Learn to recognize signs of wildlife including reading tracks, identifying scat, and more. Record findings through photos, tracings, and casts and monitor wildlife in the field, using a remote sensing camera. Tuesday field trip.
