Product Description
Many first time visitors to this beautiful and strangely desolate part of the high Colorado Plateau are surprised to learn that there is no recognizable "forest." "Earth's Rainbow Floor" by Diana Clark Lubick. As visitors travel either north or south to the Rainbow, Jasper, and Crystal forests, to Blue Mesa and the Agate Bridge, they discover the incredible scale of "Nature's greatest accident." "Geological Clues to an Ancient Forest World" by Ken Thiessen. In contrast to the desert climate of present day northeastern Arizona, the Chinle Formation of the Petrified Forest was deposited in a climate far different from the hot and dry conditions we know today. "Triassic Animals of the Petrified Forest" by Edwin H. Colbert. Those new to the area may find it difficult at first glance to picture this dry landscape as once a tropical environment, the locale of abundant plant and animal life. "Prehistory of the Petrified Forest" by Diana Clark Lubick. The sheer number of sites, over 300 in the southern half alone, tells us that there was an intensive and fairly continuous history from the early Archaic period (6000 B.C.) until shortly before the arrival of Europeans. "Protecting Our Forests of Stone" by George M. Lubick. Petrified Forest National Park is one of the youngest of America's national parks, having made the transition to park status only in 1962, after more than a half century's existence as a national monument.
