Far from somber\, these joyful creations bring warmth\, memory\, and celebration to the season. \nMaster decorators will be on hand to help you adorn your own sugar skull to take home. The Sugar Skull Decorating workshops are perfect for kids and adults. You must purchase a $10 ticket in advance for each participant. Held in partnership with Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces\, Celebraciones honors the spirit of Día de los Muertos with heartfelt remembrances and joyful festivities. \nMariachi Agave \nEnjoy cultural dances and music as you explore the brightly adorned ofrendas in the Jaime Major Golightly Courtyard\, each a stunning display of love and memory. Savor delicious traditional foods and deepen your understanding of Dia de los Muertos through cultural presentations. Mariachi Agave from Tucson and Ballet Folklorico de Colores of Flagstaff will bring distinctive sounds and movement to the celebration. Children will delight in the creativity of sugar skull decorating and face painting. \nAs the sun sets on Saturday\, the courtyard transforms into a magical scene for Courtyard After Dark. Witness the glowing ofrendas under the night sky\, indulge in sweet treats and beverages\, and soak in the rich atmosphere. Don’t miss this premier fall festival. Invite your friends and family\, from this world and the next! \nCelebraciones tickets are available in advance (see below) and at the door. DESCRIPTION:All My Gardens are Wild: 30 Years of Ethnobotany\nPresented by Phyllis Hogan\, founder of the Arizona Ethnobotanical Research Association\n \nPhyllis Hogan shares stories and insights from her three decades of work with native plants\, traditional knowledge\, and collaboration with the Indigenous communities of the Colorado Plateau. Her talk highlights the many traditional herbalists and healers she has learned from\, as well as the deep cultural and ecological relationships between people and plants in this unique region—and why preserving this knowledge matters now more than ever. From sacred tobacco to high desert herbs\, Hogan weaves together science\, spirituality\, and story in a celebration of wild gardens\, traditional life ways\, and the enduring wisdom of plants. \nThis presentation is held in partnership with the Flagstaff Festival of Science. \n

DESCRIPTION:How Large Extinct Animals Have Shaped Ecosystems and Us\nPresented by Chris Doughty\, PhD \nFrom towering dinosaurs to the mighty Pleistocene megafauna\, large animals have long influenced the balance and function of ecosystems. Their extinction not only reshaped the natural world—it also had unexpected effects on human evolution and the course of our societies. \nDoughty is an Associate Professor in ecoinformatics at Northern Arizona University. He researches how climate change will impact tropical forests and how large animal extinctions could impact ecosystem function.  He also has projects in remote sensing\, paleoclimatology and astrobiology. \n \nThis presentation is part of the Flagstaff Festival of Science.

This is a wonderful community event to celebrate the bounty of our unique region. Melons\, squash\, blue corn\, and other special produce available. Indigenous growers from the Colorado Plateau also offer a variety of food and produce for sale. \nThe location is the beautiful Colton Garden on the MNA research campus. To access parking for this event\, turn onto Research Center Drive from Fort Valley Road/Highway 180\, where the Harold S. Colton Research Center sign is located.
