DESCRIPTION:MNA members are invited to attend an ekphrastic poetry workshop with Jodie Hollander on Sunday\, October 12\, 2025\, from 12 – 2 pm. This workshop will be held in the Waddell Gallery among the current Poetry Maps exhibition. Poetry Maps closes on October 27\, 2025 – this poetry workshop is a great opportunity for members to experience Poetry Maps once more before closing. \nInterested members should RSVP to membership@musnaz.org so that we can plan accordingly. \nWhat is ekphrastic poetry? An ekphrastic poem is a vivid description of a scene or\, more commonly\, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the “action” of a painting or sculpture\, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning. (The Poetry Foundation). \nJodie Hollander is a poet who lives in Flagstaff\, Arizona\, and the author of the poetry collections My Dark Horses and Nocturne. Her work has appeared in The Poetry Review\, Poetry Magazine\, The Yale Review\, and The Harvard Review\, among other publications.

DESCRIPTION:All My Gardens are Wild: 30 Years of Ethnobotany\nPresented by Phyllis Hogan\, founder of the Arizona Ethnobotanical Research Association\n \nPhyllis Hogan shares stories and insights from her three decades of work with native plants\, traditional knowledge\, and collaboration with the Indigenous communities of the Colorado Plateau. Her talk highlights the many traditional herbalists and healers she has learned from\, as well as the deep cultural and ecological relationships between people and plants in this unique region—and why preserving this knowledge matters now more than ever. From sacred tobacco to high desert herbs\, Hogan weaves together science\, spirituality\, and story in a celebration of wild gardens\, traditional life ways\, and the enduring wisdom of plants. \nThis presentation is held in partnership with the Flagstaff Festival of Science. \n

DESCRIPTION:How Large Extinct Animals Have Shaped Ecosystems and Us\nPresented by Chris Doughty\, PhD \nFrom towering dinosaurs to the mighty Pleistocene megafauna\, large animals have long influenced the balance and function of ecosystems. Their extinction not only reshaped the natural world—it also had unexpected effects on human evolution and the course of our societies. \nDoughty is an Associate Professor in ecoinformatics at Northern Arizona University. He researches how climate change will impact tropical forests and how large animal extinctions could impact ecosystem function.  He also has projects in remote sensing\, paleoclimatology and astrobiology. \n \nThis presentation is part of the Flagstaff Festival of Science.
