SUMMARY:Apache Crown Dance
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Apache Crown Dance from the Diamond Creek Crown Dancers\nApache believe the Creator sent the Mountain Spirits (Gaan) to the Apache to teach them to live in harmony. The Apache Crown Dance is a representation of the Mountain Spirits and their importance in the Apache culture. Five male dancers perform the dance in a structured group wearing hooded masks with elaborately painted crowns and wielding painted wooden swords during the dance. The dance is performed with drum and song. \n\nDiamond Creek Crown Dancers perform the Crown Dance at tribal gatherings to preserve their culture and at exhibition events to educate the public about the rich history of the Apache people. \nThis program is included with general admission to the Museum. \nObservers should maintain silence and minimize movement during the ceremony to show respect for the dancers\, drummers and singers. Photography is permitted during the dance\, however one should never approach\, touch or request photographs with the dancers.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in MNA’s Pearson Hall (located near Colton Garden) for a discussion on the design of the Plant Providers section of Colton Garden. The section is being developed to grow locally sourced\, useful\, and beautiful native plants of the Colorado Plateau—species that benefit people\, animals\, and the earth. Many are edible\, medicinal\, fragrant\, or beneficial to pollinators and other wildlife\, and some will be cultivated in quantities to support the needs of Native artists who use these plants in basketry\, dyeing\, and other traditional arts. At this session\, we’ll review ideas from the previous meeting and gather more input as we begin drafting the design to share at the next meeting. All are welcome to participate in shaping this collaborative garden for growing\, learning\, and sharing.

DESCRIPTION:How Large Extinct Animals Have Shaped Ecosystems and Us\nPresented by Chris Doughty\, PhD \nFrom towering dinosaurs to the mighty Pleistocene megafauna\, large animals have long influenced the balance and function of ecosystems. Their extinction not only reshaped the natural world—it also had unexpected effects on human evolution and the course of our societies. \nDoughty is an Associate Professor in ecoinformatics at Northern Arizona University. He researches how climate change will impact tropical forests and how large animal extinctions could impact ecosystem function.  He also has projects in remote sensing\, paleoclimatology and astrobiology. \n \nThis presentation is part of the Flagstaff Festival of Science.

DESCRIPTION:Free Colton Garden Tour (weather permitting) \nColton Garden provides a space for people of all ages to learn about plants and reconnect with natural food sources. Located on the site of MNA founder Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton’s World War II Victory Garden the plots and greenhouses are supported by volunteers. \nColton Garden includes several examples of season extenders\, including a hoop house and a passive solar greenhouse built in 1976\, when it was the first of its kind on the Colorado Plateau. Portions of the garden are used to experiment with heirloom and native seeds and Indigenous farming methods. The garden promotes the conservation of important species of pollinators and migratory birds\, through its organic growing methods\, plant diversity and incorporation of native plants. \nThe garden is open to the public during daylight hours\, with a wheelchair accessible path\, benches\, views of the San Francisco Peaks\, and demonstration beds overflowing with flowers and vegetables. \nThe garden is located near the Discovery Village on MNA’s Research Center campus. The best way to reach the garden is to turn onto Winding Brook Road\, which leads to the Peaks Senior Living Community. Park at MNA’s Discovery Village just beyond the stop sign. \nThe tour is free; no registration required.

SUMMARY:Stories of Place: Food\, Culture\, and Community Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Join us this Saturday afternoon\, 2-3:30 pm after this year’s Colton Garden Harvest Festival for an inspiring afternoon of short films\, produced by Shonri Begay\, that explore the deep connections between food\, land\, and community resilience across the Colorado Plateau. Featured in the ArcGIS StoryMap Stories of Resilience and Diversity\, these films highlight the voices of growers\, land stewards\, educators and Indigenous leaders working to restore food sovereignty\, revitalize traditional knowledge\, and build sustainable futures rooted in place. \nFollowing the screening\, we’ll host a panel discussion with several of the storytellers featured in the films: \nShonri Begay – Diné and Tohono O’odham artist and educator whose work uplifts healing and cultural memory. \nLilian Hill – Co-founder of the Hopi Tutskwa Permaculture Institute\, advancing Indigenous food systems and ecological design. \nJohn Taylor – Community leader and advocate for intergenerational knowledge sharing. \nOakley Anderson-Moore — Filmmaker and co-founder of Superyard Farms focused on youth engagement with food and land. \nMeg Kabotie Adakai – Artist and educator focused on holistic wellness and cultural resilience. \n  \nThis event is a celebration of place-based storytelling and a call to action for community-driven food resilience. Come be inspired by the stories and join the conversation about how we can nourish our communities and landscapes—together.

SUMMARY:Harvest Festival at Colton Garden
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Northern Arizona and Flagstaff Foodlink for a fun-filled harvest celebration at the historic Colton Garden. \nSaturday\, September 13\, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. FREE for everyone. \nEnjoy a pueblo oven demonstration\, food tastings\, and kids’ activities. This is a wonderful community event to celebrate the bounty of our unique region. Melons\, squash\, blue corn\, and other special produce available. Indigenous growers from the Colorado Plateau also offer a variety of food and produce for sale. \nThe location is the beautiful Colton Garden on the MNA research campus. To access parking for this event\, turn onto Research Center Drive from Fort Valley Road/Highway 180\, where the Harold S. Colton Research Center sign is located.
