Arches and Canyonlands Trip

Details & Itinerary: The colorful, expansive mesas and buttes of Canyonlands National Park and delicate rock formations in Arches National Park will serve as the backdrop for this venture into discovering the powers of Mother Nature at work. Geologist Wayne Ranney leads day hikes through this slick rock country around Moab, Utah, as we explore the geology and natural history of this spectacular part of the country. Adventures will begin and end from the comforts of the Canyonlands Inn. Dinners are at an additional personal expense.

What to Expect: We will be traveling in a 12 passenger van. Our trip begins and ends in Flagstaff, ranging in elevation from 7000 ft. to 4000 ft. Expect some drives on dirt roads, but not 4-wheeling. Participants should be comfortable standing and hiking for several hours. You will be asked to provide your health history and information prior to the trip. Itinerary:

Day 1 - Meet at the MNA parking lot at 7:30 AM. Drive north on Highway 89 with a rest stop after about one hour. After lunch in Kayenta, a 3.1 mile hike in Monument Valley will be offered on the relatively flat Wildcat Trail. Continue through Bluff Utah and if time permits, see petroglyphs along the San Juan River. Overnight in Moab at Canyonlands Inn.

(The next three days will be run in the order necessary to have the best weather)

Day 2 – Begin at Arches National Park where we hike to Delicate Arch (3 miles). Continue by road for a short hike to Landscape Arch (2 miles) followed by a picnic lunch in the Arches campground. Short hike of 1.5 miles along the Sand Trail to Broken Arch. One mile hike downhill on the Park Avenue Trail Overnight in Moab.

Day 3 – Today we explore the Island in the Sky area of CNP. We may walk to Mesa Arch (one mile), Upheaval Dome Overlook (one-half mile), where a meteorite hit the earth some 60 million years ago. Picnic lunch here. Continue to Grandview Point for a 2 mile hike to the edge of the cliff. Overnight in Moab.

Day 4 – Today we will stay close to home and visit the Colorado River Canyon Byway area. Our first hike will be to Morning Glory Arch in Negro Bill Canyon (five miles). Next we will stop at a movie museum located along the Colorado River. Continue to Fisher Towers for a short but spectacular hike (1/2 mile). Return to Moab for our farewell dinner at a place overlooking the city. Overnight in Moab.

Day 5 – Drive back to MNA via paved road. The first stop will be in the Bear’s Ears National Monument at a petroglyph site called Newspaper Rock. Continue into Canyonlands National Park for a hike on the Chesler Park Trail. We should arrive to the Museum by about 6 PM.


Cancellations must be received in writing by mail, fax, or email. If notice of cancellation is received before 30 days prior to departure, trip fees will be refunded less a $200.00 administrative fee. For one day trips, the administrative fee is $50.00. If cancellation notice is received after 30 days prior to departure, no refunds will be issued. If the Museum cancels a trip due to inclement weather or insufficient enrollment, a full refund including the deposit will be issued. MNA is not responsible for airline cancellation penalties in the event of cancellation for any reason. This policy is followed per person without exception. We highly recommend purchasing trip cancellation insurance.
