Sculpted sandstone walls and rich canyon bottoms of Canyons de Chelly and del Muerto were oases to prehistoric Pueblo culture and historic Navajo people. Archaeologist Don Keller joins Navajo guides for four days in this inner canyon world. Four wheel drive excursions and trail hikes will take us to outstanding Ancestral Pueblo rock art and cliff dwellings. The canyon’s importance to the Navajo people is seen at trails and defensive sites, canyon-bottom fields, and exquisite pictograph panels.

What to Expect: We will be traveling by 12 passenger van along with a support vehicle. Our trip begins and ends in Flagstaff, ranging in elevation from 7000 ft. to 282 feet below sea level. Expect some drives on dirt roads, but not 4-wheeling. Participants should be comfortable standing and hiking for several hours.
