Geologic Mapping of the Grand Canyon
January 12, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Sunday, January 12, 2 p.m., in the Branigar/Chase Discovery Center Auditorium
Join us for an exploration of the U.S. Geological Survey’s long and fascinating history of geologic mapping in the Grand Canyon region. Ryan Crow, PhD, of the USGS will share the story of retired geologist George Billingsley, whose extensive work resulted in more than 70 geologic maps covering northern Arizona and southern Utah. Additionally, Crow will highlight the efforts of a new team of geologic mappers utilizing advanced technology to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the geologic evolution of the Grand Canyon region. Crow’s presentation will cover current work being conducted by the USGS in Flagstaff, revealing new insights into the Grand Canyon’s lava dams, its uplift history, and the recent determination of when the Colorado River integrated with the sea.
Crow is a research geologist at the USGS Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center in Flagstaff. He completed graduate work at the University of New Mexico, where he studied the tectonic geomorphology of the Grand Canyon. Coming to the USGS in 2014 as a Mendenhall Postdoc, he focused on the landscape evolution of the lower Colorado River corridor and the Colorado River.
This talk comes near the conclusion of the Museum of Northern Arizona’s Grand Canyon Dragon Map exhibit featuring the origins and science behind one of the bestselling geological maps of all time.
