Cost: $75 member/$95 non-member
Trip Leader: Kent Colbath
Difficulty: Difficult for a short distance, mostly Moderate
Details & Itinerary:
On this one day expedition we will hike to the top of SP Crater for glimpse inside the crater proper and for spectacular views of the San Francisco Peaks volcanic field. The hike is short but very difficult, with a steep slope and loose footing. Adjustable hiking poles are a must for this one. From the top we’ll hike down the north side of the volcano and have a look at the basal lava flow where the van will pick us up. Lunch will be at the Doney Craters picnic area, and after lunch we’ll hike Doney Craters and compare and contrast these ancient eruptions with the eruption of SP Crater.
Meet at MNA Research Center Parking lot at 8:30 am. Bring water, lunch and good walking shoes.
