Artists and Scientists of the Colorado Plateau

(Flagstaff, Ariz.)—The upcoming 2004 Sedona Lecture Series is titled Artists and Scientists of the Colorado Plateau. Presented by the Sedona Muses and the Museum of Northern Arizona, this series offers monthly lectures, bringing together prominent artists and scientists to talk about the magnificence of the region.

January 12 Inscribed in Light: Writing the Colorado Plateau
Poet and naturalist Ann Weiler Walka opens the series by exploring the collectively remembered and imagined landscapes of the Colorado Plateau and sharing stories from her book Walking the Unknown River.

February 9 Cross Pollinators: Scientists and Poets of the Plateau
Gary Paul Nabhan, Director of Northern Arizona University’s Center for Sustainable Environments, a prolific author, and an ethnobotanist, probes the interconnections between scientific and poetic perceptions of sustenance, beauty, and survival.

March 8 Releasing the Light
An artist and author, Shonto Begay of the Navajo Bitterwater and Salt Clans draws from his experiences as a writer, storyteller, and painter to share stories about the process of creativity.

April 12 Artistic and Scientific Insights to the Colorado Plateau
Director of the Museum of Northern Arizona Robert Breunig concludes the series by considering the importance of interdisciplinary investigations into the region.

Proceeds from the Sedona Lecture Series benefit the Museum of Northern Arizona. All lectures are at 7 p.m. at the Church of the Red Rocks, 54 Bowstring Drive, in Sedona. Tickets are $6 Members/$7 Nonmembers per lecture or $20 Members/$25 Nonmembers for the entire series. They are available at 6:45 p.m. at the lectures or in advance at the Museum’s front desk, 3101 N. Fort Valley Road in Flagstaff, daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Advance tickets are also available in Sedona at 928/282-4786. If a lecture sells out, late arrivals with tickets may not be able to be seated and will receive a refund.

Take a 2004 Ventures tour with lecturer Ann Weiler Walka to Escalante Country on May 22–27.
